INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL TO SECURE EBONYI'S FUTURE: NWIFURU ADMINISTRATION ESTABLISHES 2 NEW UNIVERSITIES, 39 MODEL SCHOOLS, EMPLOYS 1,936 TEACHERS, AWARDS OVER 1000 SCHOLARSHIPS*

As Ebonyi State marks 30 years of existence, the administration of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Builder Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is delivering what many stakeholders describe as the most ambitious education reform in the state’s history under the People’s Charter of Needs.

The focus is clear: expand access, improve quality, and equip Ebonyi youths to compete globally.

In a bold move to reposition Ebonyi in the knowledge economy, the state government has established two new state-owned universities:

1.University of ICT, Oferekpe Agbaja: This institution is designed to produce skilled manpower in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and digital innovation. It directly aligns with the government’s push to prepare Ebonyi youths for the global digital economy and attract tech investments to the state.

2.University of Aeronautic Engineering, Ezza: The first of its kind in the South-East, this university will focus on aviation, aerospace engineering, aircraft maintenance, and related fields. It positions Ebonyi to tap into Nigeria’s growing aviation sector and create high-skilled jobs for graduates.

Both universities are part of a deliberate strategy to move beyond conventional courses and build institutions that match 21st-century industry needs.

At the foundational level, the government has prioritized infrastructure and personnel.

A. 39 Model Secondary Schools have been constructed across the 13 LGAs. Each school comes with 22 modern classrooms, science laboratories, ICT centers, and sporting facilities — providing a conducive environment for learning.

B.  1,936 Teachers Employed in the first phases recruitment to address staffing gaps. The new teachers have been deployed to both new and existing schools to reduce class sizes and improve teaching quality.

This dual investment in buildings and manpower is aimed at reversing years of decay and ensuring no child is left behind.

To deepen access and reward excellence, the Nwifuru administration has launched a massive scholarship scheme. Over 1,000 scholarships have been awarded to Ebonyi students for both foreign and local tertiary institutions.

The first batch of 204 beneficiaries have already commenced studies in the UK, US, and Canada with full tuition and upkeep fully covered by the state government. The rest are on scholarship in top Nigerian universities and specialized institutions. The goal is to build a generation of Ebonyi professionals in medicine, engineering, law, ICT, and other critical fields who will return to serve the state.

The bigger vision is from Certificates to Capacity: This is not education for ceremony. It is education for industry, innovation, and employment. Two new universities mean new courses, new jobs, and new research centers in Ebonyi. 39 model schools mean every LGA now has a flagship secondary school.  1,936 teachers mean better learning outcomes. 1,000+ scholarships mean Ebonyi brainpower on global platforms.

Speaking on the reforms, stakeholders note that the investments reflect a shift from politics to policy — a government that is deliberately building institutions that will outlive any administration.

Governor Nwifuru’s message is consistent: “We are not just building schools. We are building people.”

As Ebonyi @ 30, the state is planting seeds in classrooms and universities today, so that tomorrow’s doctors, engineers, pilots, and tech founders will emerge from Ebonyi soil.
